How to Calculate a Salary Hike?

A salary hike is the increment you receive on your current compensation during an annual appraisal cycle or when you switch to a new company. Negotiating a good hike requires knowing the exact math behind the percentages.

The Formulas

  • Finding New Salary from Percentage: New Salary = Current Salary + (Current Salary × Hike Percentage / 100)
  • Finding Percentage from New Salary: Hike % = ((New Salary - Current Salary) / Current Salary) × 100

Our Salary Hike Calculator is equipped with a dual-mode system. You can easily toggle between finding what your new salary will be if you get a 30% hike, OR calculating what percentage of a hike that competing HR just offered you!

Frequently Asked Questions

Subtract your old salary from your new salary to get the increment amount. Then divide that increment amount by your old salary, and multiply by 100 to get the percentage.

A 'good' hike depends on industry standards and inflation, but generally, a 10% to 15% hike for staying in the same company is considered good, while a 20% to 30% hike is expected when switching jobs.
